Houtong
Houtong – A Historic Mountain Village in Taiwan
Houtong is a small mountain village located in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Originally known for its rich coal mining history during the Japanese colonial era, Houtong was once one of Taiwan's most productive mining towns. At its peak, it produced a significant portion of the country’s coal and housed a large community of miners and their families. The name "Houtong" (猴硐) literally means "Monkey Cave," a name said to have originated from the discovery of monkey fossils in a local cave, or from the monkeys that once lived in the area. After the mining industry declined in the 1990s, the village saw a dramatic decrease in population and economic activity. However, in recent years, Houtong gained new life and fame as the “Cat Village” due to the large number of stray cats that were cared for by locals and cat lovers. Today, Houtong is a popular tourist destination, combining historical mining sites, scenic views of the Keelung River, and its now-famous cat-themed attractions. Visitors can explore the old coal mining infrastructure, enjoy mountain trails, and experience a unique blend of history, nature, and local culture

8.Travel insurance for Taiwan
✅ This product does not include travel insurance. It is recommended that you purchase travel insurance before participating in the tour. Insurance coverage outside the vehicle is only valid if you purchase the Taiwan travel insurance we provide.

● The Taiwan Tourism Bureau requires that if you take a taxi tour, you must purchase travel insurance from a Taiwanese insurance company.
● Even if you have purchased travel insurance in USA, it is not recognized by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau. This may be because Korea and Taiwan do not have formal diplomatic relations.
Therefore, you must have insurance on the day of the tour. Additionally, Taiwan experiences frequent natural disasters, and in case of a natural disaster accident inside the vehicle, vehicle insurance alone will not cover the damages.
This is because Taiwanese vehicle insurance does not cover natural disaster compensation. Especially in areas like Hualien and Taroko Gorge, where falling rocks and other natural disasters are common. Also, places like Yehliu near the sea often have accidents such as slips due to rain. The insurance you purchase is to prepare for these risks, so please be sure to enroll.

✅ To purchase Taiwan domestic one-day travel insurance, passports of all tour participants are required before the tour.
(When purchasing, please be sure to provide the passport number, English name, and date of birth of all participants.)
